The news is travelling fast and furious now, although almost none of it comes from the 'typical' news sources. I have spent more and more of my time reading other WWO Netizen Heroes' entries and less adding my own. But I realize now that there is a lot of information I need to share with other people, especially right now. Authors like Lead-tag have some really great and useful information, but a lot of what I read is too conceptually foreign for the average person to get. So, I am going to direct a lot of my energy toward practical steps that anyone can do now. I also have some ideas about how to organize neighbor groups for the common good. Remember that getting people on the same page ahead of time is going to make it a lot easier to act decisively when the time comes.
One area I want to write on is more philosophical. Many of us are struggling with the ceaseless disruptions and changes to our lives, and I think there are ways to reframe our thinking so it's not so overwhelming. I don't want to sugarcoat or be unrealistically optimistic, but I also don't want despair to be the only word that comes to mind. As Bodi Lane said so eloquently, the real word of the day may be catastrophe.
Some Practical Matters...
Plenty of people are providing the news right now, so I am not going to spend much time writing about that. I will make note of how the big stuff is affecting the Heartland, and how we're having to adapt, but for the most part I am going to focus on things that may help you. I am also going to be participating in some of the missions. I may also develop my own for developing neighborhood relationships.
One point I want to make, and this is very important, is that any changes you make should be toward something and not away from it. No matter what it is that you are changing in your life, it will really only be successful if it is moving toward a goal or desired state. The more clear your ideas on what this looks like, the easier it will be to fulfill. In a time of crisis, it's hard to see beyond the NOW, but that is the time where this becomes most important. You see, when you take action and it is a re-action, you have no idea if you are actually making your situation worse or not. When you consciously say what you're trying to accomplish you'll know when you get there, or even when you get close. --- there will be more on this later.

PeakProphet,
About moving toward something--
I got this in my head before, but over the past week or two I really got it *in my bones.*
I've been stressing about not having a job in this f'd up economic environment, but some things that have developed in my neighborhood really changed my head around. I'm not just adjusting to a world without oil, but also a world without jobs--and, uh, I think *I like it better.*
Like Anna, I've found a way to gift my services & am often gifted back--meals, cat food for Snarky, even a couple blankets (useful this winter when I imagine my electricity-guzzling space heater will be useless).
Now I'm brainstorming a workaround to "unavoidable" expenses like rent + utilities...Thanks for the brain jog!
