In response to the worldwithoutoil.org "Whatever Without Oil" mission, I am presenting my personal A to Z list steps to help pull oil (and excess energy consumption) out of my life.
A - Air drying clothes as opposed to using the dryer
B - Biking to locations as opposed to driving (thanks Bodhi for suggesting the load-bearing bike challenge!)
C - Candlelight is wonderful AND efficient
D - Digging garden plots by hand as opposed to using a rototiller
E - Educating others on how to make changes to their lives to help make them more independent and energy-wise
F - Filling up the air in my tires makes sure that when I DO drive, I am as efficient as I can be
G - Growing as much food as possible in my back yard and at the co-op
H - Helping my neighbors with yardwork so they don't have to use the has lawnmower or nasty chemicals and fertilizers
I - Isolating energy-inefficient appliances and removing them
J - Jazz played acoustically in the local club instead of with a PA
K - Killing invasive plants so that native plants can return
L - Leaving the air conditioner off as much as possible in the car and at home
M - Making all of my own food and never eating out
N - Needs are met locally first, regionally second
O - Old bottles (plastic and glass) are kept and re-used for garden projects
P - Pine tar hair soap instead of shampoo
Q - Quit driving over the speed limit (cruise control only)
R - Replaced all of the incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent
S - Solar charger for the iPod
T - Take showers only when necessary, not out of habit, and keep the water cool (or cold)
U - Using hand-powered tools whenever possible, including a hand-crank drill, hand sander, etc.
V - Vacation in the back yard and at the co-op instead of somewhere far away
W - Working from home whenever possible
X - Ok, I couldn't come up with an X, except using the xylophone for entertainment instead of the TV... okay, it's really a glockenspiel and not a xylophone, and it's not that entertaining
Y - Yard debris is composted and used for mulching as opposed to being collected by the city or thrown away
Z - Zany games like Apples to Apples really are more entertaining than TV or glockenspiels
